Home Remedy For Infected Fingernail

This is a post about how to get rid of an infected fingernail.

There are numerous causes of infection in nails, including bacterial infections, fungal infections, yeast infections, and others. A common cause of bacterial nail infections is ingrown nails (jagged, torn edges between the nail and skin). Occupational hazards like mining or farming can also cause infection in nails. Conditions like psoriasis or eczema can simply lead to bacteria on the skin forming a biofilm under the nail(s).

An infected fingernail is when there is pus and sometimes fluid from the infection, which can cause an unpleasant smell. This infection occurs in the nail bed area and can be caused by a number of different factors such as repeated injury to the nail, bacterial or fungal attack, contact with chemicals, skin diseases like psoriasis, or eczema.

The most common treatment for an infected fingernail includes removing any nails that may be causing pressure on the infected area and applying topical antibiotic cream. Another option for treatment includes using hydrogen peroxide and baking soda to create a paste then apply it over your finger(s). The hydrogen peroxide will kill the bacteria and the baking soda will help to remove any dead tissue.

There are some home remedies that you can use to get rid of the infection within your nails. None of these treatments are guaranteed so if they do not work then use a professional treatment at your own expense.

Apply miconio oil onto the fingernail(s) you would like to treat, for 10 minutes up to 5 times a day. The miconio oil is an antifungal, that will help kill off any fungus or bacteria present in the infected nail.

If you are experiencing an infected fingernail, then one thing you can use is vinegar.

Vinegar contains a compound called acetic acid that helps to kill off the fungus.

Simply apply vinegar to the fingernail you are trying to treat and place some cotton wool over the top of it. The vinegar will start to dissolve any dead tissue and help reduce the infection.
It may be worth repeating this process a few times a day for a couple of days or until all symptoms have gone.

On a regular basis, you should regularly clean the infected area with antiseptic cream if you do this after each application of miconic oil to your fingernails. Then when you use the vinegar the area will not be as dirty.

It is also recommended that you buy a bottle of nail polish remover and use it on your fingernail to make sure you completely take away any dead tissue, as this can easily cause infection when being scratched by your nails.

If there is no improvement within 12 days of applying the above home remedies then it may be worth getting in contact with your GP who would be able to suggest some treatments for an infected fingernail.

Another useful home remedy for a fingernail infection is to use the contents of a toothpaste tube as a nail polish remover.

Just apply some toothpaste onto your fingernails and then apply an old nylon sock over it, leaving the tip cut off. Now soak up any excess moisture with an old towel or cloth; this way you should be able to remove all traces of pus and bacteria within minutes.

If you are not able to access the toothpaste then just use a normal nail polish remover.
