How To Protect Yourself From Attacker – What You Should Know

If you’re over 50, there’s a chance that you’ve already been the victim of an attack. Before you think that it can’t happen to you, consider the fact that many people over 50 are widowed or divorced, and maybe living alone- making them prime targets.

In this post, we’ll give you some practical advice on how to protect yourself from an attacker when they come up out of nowhere with a bad attitude and intent on doing harm.

1. Stay Alert

You can’t protect yourself from every attack. But, you can get yourself to a position in which you have the best chance of surviving and coming out on top. One way to do this is to learn how to spot and avoid any potential attacker as quickly as possible- without having to react defensively.

2. Avoid Assailant’s Pulling You Close For An Attack

You might think that it’s an instinctive reaction for someone trying to pickpocket you or find your purse or wallet, but that’s not always true, especially when that person is younger than you are and has (in his mind) history of being successful with his past crimes.

Instead of giving in to the instinct, you can protect yourself by remaining vigilant when you’re out and about. Be aware of your surroundings and scan them for anything that might be suspicious- such as someone wearing a hat with an unusual shape- or someone who is very good at faking a limp or using crutches.

3. Resist – Only If You Know How

If you’re being attacked, it’s natural to react by struggling or trying to fight back. However, in this case, you should try not to do either of those two things- and one reason is that your attacker might have a weapon that could injure you severely if they were to use it on you while it was still in their possession.

The exception to this rule is to resist if you know what to do. There are courses that show you what to do if you are being grabbed or attacked. Below is a great online course that teaches you simple yet powerful techniques to counter someone attacking you.

4. Be Aware Of Your Surroundings

The most important way of keeping yourself safe from physical attack is simply to stay alert and aware of your surroundings at all times: day or night, even when you’re in a familiar place.

5. Use Common Sense

If you’re like most people over 50 years old, you’ve probably already been the victim of an attack at least once. But, if just one of these methods could help that go differently for you the next time, we think that it’s worth your time to take the simple steps to remember what common sense dictates.

6. Don’t Take Everything At Face Value

Once again, the best way to protect yourself from an attacker is by using common sense. If something looks suspicious, don’t assume that it’s harmless– even if it seems that way at first glance. Remember what you’ve learned about spotting when an attack will be coming up out of nowhere: Assailant’s Pulling You Close For An Attack.

All of the above tips are simple things that are easy to remember, yet they have the potential to prevent future attacks from happening; and, in some cases, it may even save your life.

  1. This is a very practical post and an excellent reminder to everyone to be more aware of their surrounds when they are out.  Thankfully I have never been attracted and hopefully I never will be.

When I am out and about I have always been very careful to keep my hand over my wallet as I think it must be a nightmare for anyone who gets their wallet or purse stolen.  As it generally contains their only source to their money.

Thanks for sharing and stay safe everyone.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. It seems like we are living in some unreal times and as much as we hate to think about it there are some bad people wondering around.

Protecting yourself and your loved ones is one of the most important things anyone should do. Learning basic techniques can truly save you from becoming a victim.

  2. A post that can help people to be aware if they live in an area where attacks happen. I live in the UK and such attacks are rare, occasionally there are spates of them in major cities but are soon dealt with.

However, it is always good to be vigilant if out alone as what we deem the safest areas, aren’t always as safe as we think

It is always good to be prepared and have moves that can help you.

Thank you, I enjoyed the post.

    1. Hi Linda,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this subject. Unfortunately, here in the states these kind of attacks are becoming more common.

As you said, it is still important to be aware of your surroundings and to be able to protect yourself if you do run into trouble.

Thanks for sharing and I’m glad you enjoyed the post.

  3. HI there

I really think anyone of any age can be attacked but I do see your point that older people may feel more vulnerable.

You are including some good tips.  Yes, always be alert and aware of your surroundings.  Anticipate things. Ensure that you do not carry a lot of cash or have with you things that are of great value especially if you are in an unknown or obvious dangerous area.

Rather drive through strange places and keep your bags and wallets out of sight in the boot of your car.

Travel with others and not on your own if you are feeling vulnerable.

    best wishes

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this subject. It is important for everyone to take whatever steps they can to be sure to keep themselves out of bad situations.

Unfortunately, the bad guys pick their own targets, and if you are one of them you need to know how to protect yourself.
