Low Calorie Smoothies For Weight Loss – What Yoe Need To Know
For many years people have tried various methods to lose weight and manage calorie intake. One method that has recently become popular is the use of “low calorie” or “weight loss” smoothies. Smoothies provide a wide range of nutrient-dense foods which will reduce hunger and cravings, as well as promote weight loss by providing good nutrition without being high in calories.
While there are many different ways to make low-calorie smoothies, most use a mixture of fresh fruit and other ingredients to provide a significant amount of nutrients. A smoothie is simply a drink that uses fruit as its main ingredient and also contains some added liquids such as water or non-dairy milk.
Smoothies are often referred to as “ready-to-drink” because they can be made in advance, frozen for storage, and then thawed for consumption at their ready time.
Low-Calorie Smoothies For Weight Loss
Most people do not realize how beneficial these drinks can be in terms of nutrition and weight loss. Smoothies are an easy way to get the nutrition that you and your body need without overloading on calories. In addition, the many different advantages that smoothies hold over other forms of this drink such as protein shakes, juices, and fruit smoothie recipes are worth exploring. Here’s how it can work for you:
Obesity is a problem in this country with drastic and costly consequences. According to the American Obesity Association, every year an estimated 150 million people in America are diagnosed with obesity (www.AOA.org). Although some may consider this figure small or unexpected there have been a lot of health problems associated with obesity including heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and joint problems. Overweight individuals are predisposed to all of these and other medical problems such as stroke, cancer, and osteoarthritis.
A few of the more common causes of obesity are a high-fat diet, lack of physical activity, and genetics. Although these are all possible reasons for the rising obesity epidemic in America, everyone is not created equal. Although some people have had family members who were overweight they may still find themselves struggling to lose the extra weight that they gained from other factors. Many approaches have been used (or tried) by people to lose weight but most of them fail or lead to dangerous side effects.
Smoothies can be an effective method for losing weight without potential adverse side effects. Unlike other diet programs, smoothies are delicious and natural, they provide quick delivery of energy (because they approximate the fast digestion of liquids), and they increase satiety (because they are high in fiber).
The idea behind smoothies is that since they contain a lot of fruits or vegetables that people will naturally notice an increase in their daily consumption. Instead of just using fruits to sweeten food, the idea is to add them to the diet as an actual ingredient. The idea is that combining fruit with water or milk will eliminate the need for sugar and will make people feel full faster.
Fruit smoothies are a great way to add nutrients and increase the amount of fiber that people consume. The downside to this is that most people don’t actually touch the fruit during the process. If you use a high-powered blender for smoothies, you’ll have to put in a lot of food in order to get enough fiber in your smoothie. If you use regular blenders, you’ll have to drink considerable amounts of liquid in order to get enough fiber as fruit is watery by itself. In either case, this can be an effective and healthy diet for weight loss but it is not an easy way to do it (more on that later).
The great part about smoothies is that they don’t require a lot of effort and the result is pretty effective. It’s easy to make a smoothie in your kitchen and it will take just a few minutes to consume. If you have kids or are dealing with picky eaters, making them drink fruit smoothies will be an easy solution as people tend to get bored quickly with food. You can add any fruit you want but for weight loss purposes, you should choose fruits that are rich in fiber and water (like watermelon, cantaloupe, pineapple). Choosing low-calorie fruits will make you feel less hungry and make you focused on your smoothie.
You can make your smoothies at any time of the day. If you are too busy during the morning or have a free evening, you can go to the supermarket and choose a fresh variety of fruit to make your smoothies for that night. You don’t need to be in the kitchen for hours mixing and measuring stuff to create a tasty result. Preparation is easy and fast as long as you have all the ingredients in your kitchen (and even with them, it’s not much of a hassle). You can even make smoothies on the go if you have a portable blender or if you find fresh fruit in your supermarket.
The downside to this is that some people may find it too easy to do and end up going back to their regular eating habits. Making smoothies and eating them requires little effort, so some people will get bored with it rather quickly. Also, they will tend to eat more fiber than they are used to as fruits are not as filling as other foods. Just be careful that too much fiber will make you constipated especially if you don’t drink enough water with your smoothie.
The main reason why smoothies work is because of the high consumption of fiber and water that they provide. Fiber and water are the main reasons that we feel full faster and they also satisfy our desire to chew on something. In addition, fiber can also give us a boost of energy as it is digested slowly by our stomach. If you drink a lot of smoothies, you’ll feel satisfied for hours because of their filling nature, and this way you won’t need to snack between meals. Also, since smoothies are low in calories, they will not make you gain weight.

I have tried these smoothies in the past to help with my gastroparesis and diabetes, but have never really stuck with a smoothie diet to help me manage any extra weight. Is this a healthy method for people who have several health issues, including conditions that may be responsible for those extra pounds (for example, hypothyroidism)?
Hi Stephanie,
You can still use a smoothie diet with those conditions, you just have to be extra careful to know what you can put into them. Here is a link to an article I found that gives some advice on what you should make your smoothies with :

As I am getting older, I am now in my early sixties, I do find that I need to watch what I am eating far better as weight does seem to creep up on us. Although I love smoothies and always eat fruit for breakfast, I have never considered a diet of just smoothies.
Smoothies can add many beneficial nutrients to your diet. I am a bit confused though. Do you suggest that one only drinks smoothies to replace your normal meals, or would smoothies be part of your daily diet? Thank you.
The smoothie diet works best when you use smoothies to replace 2 meals. You should still eat at least 1 meal a day. I think the best way to do this is to mix it up. One day have smoothies for breakfast and lunch and eat your normal dinner, then the next day eat your normal breakfast and have smoothies for lunch and dinner, etc.
