Natural Remedies To Get Rid Of Dandruff – What You Should Know

Itchy, itchy.
Dandruff is an issue that anyone can get- and at any age! It usually starts in the teen years and then reoccurs later in life. No matter your age, dandruff can be an extremely frustrating problem to deal with. Luckily there are some natural remedies that will help relieve your skin of this dry, flaky condition that causes those itchy flakes to make their way onto your clothes, into your hair, or out of the steam from a hot shower.

The culprit

Anyone who has ever suffered from dandruff knows how terrible it can be, but what do you really know about this condition? Dandruff is caused by a fungus called Malassezia, which lives on the surface of skin without causing any damage. What happens to cause dandruff is when the skin sheds its outer layer of keratinized cells and they are replaced by new cells. While this is happening, and it does happen, the fungus stages its takeover. The new skin cells become a bit resistant to bacteria and fungus, so the fungus takes over.

When Malassezia takes over dandruff can occur from the roots of hair follicles that are damaged by daily friction and abrasion from clothes, skin products or even our own fingernails. This can cause itchiness on the scalp because of the sensitivity to bacteria, which are triggered by the fungus.

How to get rid of dandruff naturally

There are two types of dandruff: Seborrheic Dandruff

Malassezia is the culprit for this problem. It can be caused by a yeast or bacteria, and in some cases, a combination of both. In the past there was no effective treatment for seborrheic dandruff males and most people were prescribed a ketoconazole shampoo or creams. But now, more people are turning to natural remedies for dandruff.

Ketoconazole was found to be ineffective in treating seborrheic dandruff, so it was removed from the market. Ingredients such as tea tree oil, hydrocortisone, zinc oxide and other antimicrobial agents are prescribed for treating this condition. While this is a temporary treatment for those with seborrheic dandruff, it does not prevent the fungus from coming back.

If you do not like the side effects of prescribed medicine, or if you want to try a more natural remedy, then there are some natural remedies for dandruff.

Natural Remedies for Dandruff

Tea Tree Oil is one of the best natural antidandruff shampoos available, and it has been found to be effective in treating seborrheic dandruff and other forms such as pityriasis versicolor. One study showed that 5% tea tree oil shampoo was just as effective as 1% ketoconazole shampoo. You can purchase this at any health food store or online and mix it with your favorite natural shampoo.

Tea Tree Oil is a great natural remedy for dandruff, but you must be sure to use extra caution when using it. Tea tree oil is concentrated and can cause irritations for some people with sensitive skin or those with respiratory issues, so always test the product out on a small area first. Make sure you dilute it with water and use it only twice a week.

Tea Tree Oil can be used in place of shampoo as well. Mix 1 tablespoon of tea tree oil with 2 tablespoons of water in a bowl and mix it well. Then add ½ cup of natural shampoo and apply it to wet hair, making sure to lather it up after each use. Leave the tea tree oil in for 8-10 minutes, then rinse off and follow with a conditioner that has been diluted with water.

Oatmeal is another great natural remedy for dandruff. Oatmeal helps to relieve itching associated with dandruff and is packed with cholesterol which is a moisturizer. You can make your own dandruff remedy by boiling one cup of water and adding 1 teaspoon of cider vinegar. Add 2 tablespoons of oatmeal, let it sit for 5 minutes, then remove from the heat and soak your hair in the mixture for 20 minutes before rinsing it out. If your scalp is sensitive to vinegar, you can use any mild shampoo in place of the vinegar.

Aloe Vera gel is a great natural way to get rid of dandruff. Aloe Vera has been shown to kill bacteria, fungus, and yeast on contact. It also helps to reduce inflammation as well as soothe irritated skin. You can purchase a bottle and rub it onto your skin once or twice a day or buy an aloe vera plant and cut off a piece that contains the gel and then rub this into your scalp.

Egg whites help to reduce dandruff caused by yeast. By mixing egg whites with water, vinegar, and baking soda you can create a paste that will help to stop the growth of yeast on your scalp. The baking soda helps to scrub away the dead skin cells and the vinegar helps to prevent fungus from growing back. Add all three ingredients together into a bowl and mix it well. Then add in enough water until you reach the consistency of mayonnaise. Once the paste has reached that consistency, apply it to your scalp and leave it in for 20 minutes. Wash it off with regular shampoo and conditioner.

Honey is also a great natural remedy for dandruff. It has antibacterial and antifungal properties which help to fight off yeast, fungus, and bacteria. You can even use it as a hair conditioner. By mixing together equal parts honey and lemon juice, you can create a paste that will help to prevent dandruff and revitalize the hair. You can leave this mixture on for 15 minutes and then rinse it off before shampooing your hair.

Finally, you can use castor oil to treat your dandruff. Castor oil is a natural antifungal and antimicrobial agent that penetrates deeply into skin and hair follicles to kill the fungus. Mix equal parts of castor oil with an equal amount of olive oil. Then add enough water until the mixture has a consistency similar to that of shampoo. Once it has reached this consistency, massage it into your scalp and let it sit for 10 minutes before rinsing it out with water.

Haircare products are available at most drug stores and grocery stores, but natural remedies for dandruff should be your first choice. They work better and do not contain any harmful ingredients only natural ones.
